In his Polite Fictions project, Michael Pigneguy uses manipulated rephotography of ceramic portraits from headstones in St. Michael’s cemetery (Hong Kong) to create layered images that question gender and culture codes. The project aims to question the relationship between domesticity and privacy, agenda and gender politics, information and control, inclusion and exclusion, borders and transactions, and patriotism and dissent. Through the use of layering photographs with text, Pigneguy creates haunting silhouettes.
