Many times have I had to convince people that denim-on-denim is an alright look. For fear of resembling a metal head from the ’80s, a mechanic (though I’m sure someone can make both of these work), or worst of all a model from a GAP campaign, many people avoid the combination completely. However, on top of being incredibly functional, a jean jacket can also be incredibly fashionable.

Outfit 1:
Assert your rebellion by wearing jeans on your torso and your uniqueness with a loud t-shirt—extra cred for a nicely designed band shirt, since jeans and rock & roll go together oh so well. However, there are a few rules for rocking the jean jacket. First, The wash of denim is very important: you cannot wear jeans the same shade of denim as the jacket. Second, a very light denim should probably be avoided. And third, don’t wear it with khakis, unless you’re going for the aforementioned GAP ad look. However, this is one of the only times when navy and black can be juxtaposed effectively so you shouldn’t feel too limited.

Outfit 2:
There’s something about denim jackets that goes really well with plaid (and toques). The glory of the jean jacket is its versatility; you can wear it when it’s warm (Outfit 1) or add some flannel to weather-proof it. Its adorability really only increases with the addition of layers—think ties, interesting sweater, a hoodie with the hood and drawstrings hanging out, etc.—so try out new things you might not have previously considered.
