It’s safe to say that plaid is a fairly universal signifier of fortitude and manliness, so how better to protect oneself against the harsh winter elements? I never hopped on the formerly trendy, now played-out tartan train, but I think that the classic red-black-white lumberjack uniform still has its place – especially when worn with a personalized urban flair, tastefully integrating classic Canadiana with streetwear.
Outfit 1: Denim and plaid are, in my opinion, a pleasant and logical pairing just like milk and cookies. The jacket’s white fur collar prevents the denim outfit underneath from appearing superfluous, and little touches like the winter-ready combat boots and pageboy cap compliment the seasonal flavor of the plaid while contributing a sense of currency. Overall, the large collar, plentiful pockets and slouchy structure make this lumber-jacket a singular classic.
Outfit 2: This outfit proves that a little plaid goes a long way. Although I’m an advocate of monochrome, especially when the weather turns bleak, the colorful pattern peeking through here combined with a warm, chunky scarf brings an otherwise stock ensemble to the next level. The lumberjack shirt worn unbuttoned with a graphic tee underneath is distinctly contemporary, and the contrasting textures of the leather jacket, the patent combat boots, and the flannel lumberjack shirt unite to create a unique look.
