Born in England Simon Spurr, the Creative Director of SPURR, has a B.A (with honors) in Mens Fashion Design from Middlesex University. Along with that, and his 12 years worth of experience in design and product development, Spurr has worked amongst some of the biggest brands in luxury menswear, including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Yves Saint Laurent. Now with his own label, Simon Spurr’s products are regularly showcased in the major fashion industry publications.

1. Be Yourself
Individuality is important when defining yourself. Know what you like, but be open to other opinions. Demonstrating flexibility in life (as a tree bends with the wind), is an honorable virtue to posses. It is easy to be swayed and a true test of individual strength is to remain true to your inherent core values.
2. Less is More
Having established the width and depth of your individuality, know the limits. Understanding the environment in which you live will allow you to prepare and operate successfully within it. Elegance is born from an understanding of what is appropriate, mixed with a personal confidence. Let your contemporaries notice the man walking into the room before noticing the clothes your are wearing. This is invariably achieved by being understated – less is more!
3. Grace and Manners
Opening doors, saying please, thank you and good morning is a dying art. It costs nothing, and yet many people forget to do it. Simple standards go along way these days. Be a gentleman and notice the difference in the way people look at you in return.
4. Beauty is Skin Deep
Expanding your inner being by showing awareness. Awareness in the form of listening with open ears and seeing with open eyes. “The man who ceases to be astonished is hollow, possessed of an extinguished heart. 5. Wear a Unique Cologne
If you have time, try to search out a more individual cologne that the ones on offer at the airport. Having a personal scent is just as important as the clothes that you wear. Just like the saying ‘you can tell a lot about a man by the shoes that he wears,’ an equal amount can be said about the scent that you wear.
6. Buy the Right Size Clothes
When investing in clothes, take the time to buy the right fit. Sometimes, the right fit is smaller, closer to the body than you think. You actually gain more movement and motion in a slimmer fitting garment as it sits closer to your body like a second skin, than something larger. The shoulder of a custom suit from Saville Row will sit on top of your shoulder (not off of it).
7. Finding the Right Shoes
Finding the right shoes is an almost impossible task. Invariably you will need a pair of black (more formal) and brown (more everyday) shoes. I personally buy shoes that have length to them, so they pronounce the foot, and that have thinner soles. I find that these come across as being more elegant, plus they have more feel to them. Remember that when you find a great pair of shoes, think about investing in two pairs, they probably won’t be there come next season!
8. Flower Power
Don’t be afraid of accessorizing your suit or sport coat lapel with a flower. Adding a single or double flower to an otherwise simple look can be just enough to move you up of few ranks without going out on limb. Think Alain Delon late 60s / early 70s, or look out for SPURR SP’10 collection.
