These ‘living photographs’ were extremely popular in the early twentieth century, as nationalistic fervor whipped up in support of World War I. They’re exactly what you think, photographs of carefully plotted crowds captured from a distance. Photographers such as Arthur Mole and John Thomas specialized in this very unique style of photography. Bordering between propaganda and creative photography, these works are an impressive window into the creative and cultural mindset that dominated America during the Great War.
