Make a patterned shirt earn its place
Try a patterned shirt with familiar trousers, a jacket and an off-duty outfit before buying. Check collar comfort, shoulder placement and ease through the chest when sitting. A non-iron description is not permission to ignore the garment’s washing instructions. On a second-hand purchase, inspect cuffs, collar wear and buttons, and compare actual measurements rather than relying on the size label.

Remember months ago when that photo of Michael Bastian wearing a “fun shirt” floated around the interweb? Well, I sure do. Mr. Porter is currently stocking an option quite similar to the one Basty was wearing made by Brooks Brothers. Aside from being made from oxford cloth and featuring a variety of different coloured stripes, the shirt is also part of the company’s non iron collection. So if you have an issue working an iron, you’ll be in the clear.
